The John Butler Memorial Trophy (also sometimes called the John Butler Memorial Award) is a special contribution award in Australian kendo.
It’s a memorial award/trophy named in honour of John Butler, an early and influential figure in Australian kendo who helped establish the art in Melbourne and in Australia.
The trophy is presented at the annual Australian Kendo Championships (AKC) and is awarded to a person who has made a significant contribution to kendo—who exemplify dedication, service, and leadership within the sport. For example,
- Significant organisational or developmental work in kendo, such as coaching, organising events, supporting youth, or building clubs and programs.
- Being a key part of kendo activities over many years and contributing to its growth in Australia.
Queensland’s Eric Jeffrey Sensei from QUT Kendo Club was the award recipient at the 48th AKC! Recognised for his leadership, organisation and attendance at many National kendo events, contribution to QLD kendo both at the club level and State level, and his exemplary attitude and ways of working with people.

N.B. The John Butler Award was recently upgraded as the old shield was full and had no space for additional plaques. QKR with the permission of the AKR asked Eric Sensei who is a woodworking craftsman if he would be able to undertake the construction of the new shield. Eric Sensei replicated the shield from recycled redgum timber leading into the 48th AKCs.
The creation of the new shield and being the recipient of the award has especial significant to Eric Sensei as John Butler was a close friend and role model for him.
