Funding for members and Clubs

QKR January 26, 2026

The QKR understands the cost of living challenges members experience and encourage you to take the funding opportunities available through the Qld Government and Local Councils. Play On Sport Vouchers is a must for 5–17-year-olds and relatively easy to obtain and use. Any questions, please get in touch with us.

Individuals (Juniors)

Play On! Sports Vouchers

Qld Government’s Play On! Sports Vouchers for Round 2 are set to open on 29 January 2026. (vouchers must be presented to QKR by 19 June 2026).
Every Queensland child aged 5 to 17 is eligible for one voucher per financial year. Use your $200 voucher to cover the QKR Registration fee and Club training fees. Apply HERE!

Emerging Athlete Pathways

The Emerging Athlete Pathways (EAP) program supports eligible young athletes, coaches and officials aged 10-18 years to progress on a development pathway by providing financial assistance to help alleviate the costs associated with attending state, national and international events. Apply HERE!

QLD Kendo Team 2026

QKR January 25, 2026

We are now calling for Expressions of Interest (EOI) from members who wish to represent Queensland at the 48th Australian Kendo Championships (AKC 2026), to be held on the Gold Coast.

AKC is the highest-level national kendo competition in Australia and an important opportunity to challenge yourself, gain shiai experience, and contribute to the growth of QLD kendo.
Even if you are unsure about selection or new to shiai, we strongly encourage you to submit an EOI.

QLD Selection Shiai

As part of the selection process, QLD will again conduct a Selection Shiai (round-robin style) prior to AKC 2026.

This Selection Shiai:

Is a key part of the selection criteria
Provides a fair and transparent evaluation
Is also one of the best learning opportunities available, especially for those with limited shiai experience

Please note:

Submitting an EOI does not mean you are committing to compete
Selection is not based on wins alone. Attitude, consistency, zanshin, and team balance are also considered
First-time shiai participants are very welcome

The Selection Shiai will be
February 7th(Saturday) 2026, 1- 4pm at Redland Memorial Hall, Cleveland

Team selection will be impartial and transparent:

A selection panel will include myself, the manager, and a senior referee/sensei’s to ensure balanced decisions.
Evaluation will combine technical trials, training attendance, past tournament results, and attitude/teamwork, using standardized scoring rubrics.
All criteria will be published before trials. Each athlete will receive feedback post-selection.
An appeal process will be available for any candidate who wishes to challenge their selection outcome, ensuring fairness and trust in the process.

Reporting complaints of issues

QKR September 22, 2024

The Queensland Kendo Renmei takes member protection and sport integrity seriously and expect ALL members tp behave and interact with each other in line with AKR Policies, Values and QKR Policies at ALL times. This means that we treat each other with respect, care, honesty, fairness and dignity to ensure a positive and supportive culture and a safe, ethical and inclusive environment. In particular, those who supervise, manage or have power over others have a special responsibility to model positive and correct behaviour, and to ensure that the people they supervise and influence understand the standard of performance and behaviour that is expected of them. Members are expected to accommodate and respect different opinions and perspectives and manage disagreements by rational debate.

Be familiar with the AKR Code of Conduct and the AKR National Integrity Framework.

Breaches of Policies

All alleged breaches in relation to relevant policies will be managed under the Complaints Disputes and Disciplines Policy. This Policy sets out the process for resolving complaints arising from a breach of an eligible policy.

Complaints in relation to breaches under the National Integrity Framework relating to Child Safeguarding or Discrimination based on features including race, disability, sex, sexual orientation and gender identity, will be managed by Sport Integrity Australia with all other complaints being managed by Australian Kendo Renmei.

Lodging a Complaint or report

Below are some simple tips to remember when considering lodging a complaint or a report. .

Anyone can make a complaint or a report.
Only complaints relating to anti-doping rule violations, alleged breaches of prohibited conduct under the National Integrity Framework relating to Child Safeguarding and Discrimination can be submitted to Sport Integrity Australia.
Complaints relating to code of conduct, selections, review & appeals & personal grievance are not covered under the National Integrity Framework. Complaints of this nature should be submitted to Australian Kendo Renmei.

Report a breach of an integrity policy relating to Child Safeguarding and Discrimination directly through the Sport Integrity Australia website.

For all other complaints, report directly to the AKR Complaints Manager by emailing a fully completed AKR Complaints Form to complaintsmanager@kendoaustralia.asn.au

QKR Equipment Hire Scheme for Clubs

QKR July 1, 2024

QKR was awarded a Gambling Community Benefit Fund of $23,652 for equipment purchase to assist clubs and members via an equipment hire scheme. The purpose is to get the members started with equipment before they commit to their own equipment purchases.

The QKR has purchased the following equipment:

3 x Junior Kendo Bogu Set (A1-alpha MK2-ISG Safety Guard)

The equipment is available for hire by the clubs for 6-month periods. Please review the QKR Equipment Library Policy.

Equipment hire policy

Applies only to new bogu sets

Initial deposit non-refundable: $300
Monthly hire fee: $20/month with 6 months upfront hire fee
Maximum hire term: 6months. After 6 months (or earlier) you can decide whether to return the equipment or purchase it.

Total initial cost is $420.

If you decide to purchase the equipment you will only need to pay the balance of the value of the bogu set from what you have already paid in deposit and hire fees (see the table below for the equipment cost).

Example: Balance after 6 months: $650 – $420 = $230 ($500 – $420 = $80 for student)

If you decide to return the bogu set before the 6 months limit, QKR will refund you the un-used monthly fees.

Example: If after 2 months you return the set, the QKR will refund you 4 x $20 = $80 (6 months – 2 months = 4 months).

QKR 2024 Annual General Meeting

QKR July 1, 2024

The Queensland Kendo Renmei Annual General meeting for 2024 will be held on Saturday 6 July at 12:30pm during the QKR State Seminar and Grading event.

Election – 2024 is the election year for the QKR Management Committee roles. Nominations closed on 21 June 2024. The Returns Officer only received one nonination for each of the following roles:

President
Vice president
Secretary

No nomination was received for the role of the Treasurer.

We encourage all members to attend the meeting to have your say.

EOI – Active Women Cert III Coaching Course

Grants and funding support

QKR May 4, 2024

Over the past couple of months, the QKR executive has completed the task of having the Queensland Kendo Renmei recognized as the state governing body for Kendo, Iaido and Jodo as it pertains to the QKR.

During this process the QKR has been confirmed as an affiliate of an NSO namely the Australian Kendo Renmei.

The reason that we have taken these steps with the State Government was to enable our junior members the opportunities to take advantage of state funding which is available to them.

I am pleased to announce that the National Parks Sports and Recreation have accepted the following events as those that our junior members can apply for funding assistance.

1. Young Athletes Travel Subsidy

Please note that “Junior” in respect to the funding is listed as younger than 18 years prior to the start of the event, however it is stressed that each application should be read carefully.

The following travel subsidy amounts are available under the three event tiers:

State or state school event—$200

National or national school event—$400

International event—$600.

2. Get Started Vouchers Program

During this process we have tried to ensure that those registered clubs of the QKR can take advantage of the Get Started Voucher System. Mackay Kendo Club was already listed as is the Kohokai Club.

To be eligible the application must be completed by each club wishing to take part in the program. The program allows provision for a voucher to the value of $150 to be submitted to the club by a New Member which will be reimbursed to a QGrant account setup by the club.

We understand that there is some work involved for each club, however it may assist in building your junior membership if you choose to take part in this process. The process of the $150 is left to each club but as a suggestion $50 would pay membership either class fees or equipment support for the rest.

3. The Local Sporting Champions Grant

We would bring to your attention the ASC funding grant available to members under 18

This is a federal imitative and a little more flexible for what it can be used. It can be used for championships state or national, as a Coach, Official or competitor.

We have spoken to the AKR and they have indicated that endorsement of national or state championship should be a straight forward process which they would be happy to assist the QKR with.

4. The Australian Sports Foundation

https://asf.org.au We have also completed arrangements with Australian Sports funding organisation and it is hoped that we can leverage their expertise in assisting us with raising funds for various projects under the QKR banner. The AKR has an existing relationship with the ASF via the Australian World Kendo team who are already using this service and it is hoped that the QKR will also benefit by having more in this space soon.
